Hiring Playbook: 5 Questions that Reveal a Top Performer in Industrial Sales

Anyone can say they're a top performer.

These five questions help uncover whether they truly are.

1. "Tell me about the toughest sale you've ever closed."

Top performers rarely start with the outcome.

Instead, they'll naturally walk you through:

  • The challenge

  • Their strategy

  • Obstacles they overcame

  • Why the customer ultimately said yes

Listen for ownership. If every success sounds like a team effort and every failure was someone else's fault, dig deeper.

2. "When your pipeline starts looking light, what's the first thing you do?"

This question separates proactive salespeople from reactive ones.

Top performers usually have a system.

Maybe it's:

  • Increasing prospecting activity

  • Reconnecting with dormant accounts

  • Asking for referrals

  • Scheduling customer visits

  • Reviewing lost opportunities

You're looking for intentional habits, not hope.

3. "Tell me about a time you had to learn an entirely new product or market."

Industrial sales changes constantly.

The best candidates don't wait to be taught.

Listen for curiosity, initiative, and how they became credible with customers.

Great salespeople are continuous learners.

4. "Describe the most difficult customer relationship you've turned around."

Every salesperson inherits unhappy customers.

Top performers explain:

  • How they built trust

  • How they uncovered the real problem

  • What actions they took

  • The long-term result

Strong relationship builders almost always tell detailed stories.

5. "Looking back over your career, what accomplishment are you most proud of?"

Notice what they choose.

Top performers often talk about:

  • Solving difficult problems

  • Building something from scratch

  • Helping customers succeed

  • Growing a territory

  • Mentoring teammates

The answer often tells you what motivates them far beyond compensation.
